It's happy and sad at the same time, which is hard for my Disney fed mind to wrap itself around.

I love these types of chapters where you use dialog to really bring out the character development. You're very good at making us care about the characters.

Can't wait to get back into TSM and to read what you have next.Erichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05571302657092617699noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-78360596563607600062009-07-14T11:04:08.871-04:002009-07-14T11:04:08.871-04:00That's great - we get new TSM chapters, and we...That's great - we get new TSM chapters, and we get the other stuff sooner as well. I was already torn between which I wanted first - TSM, or the Impossible Railroad.

Also, that'll will mean that TSM does not suffer due to time pressure - each chapter will be ready when it is ready.psonoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-49860930396318134742009-07-14T10:51:01.774-04:002009-07-14T10:51:01.774-04:00Dear all,
The details of the continuation of TSM ...Dear all,

The details of the continuation of TSM should appease both camps, actually (those who look forward to it and those who are more ambivalent, that is).

New TSM chapters will be issued in the gaps between other stories. We will not be doing a straight run of TSM from here to the finish.

One of the benefits of the mixed blessing of TSM being quite discontiguous is that I think it can survive coming in separated installments like that.

The bottom line is that I have other stories that I'm excited to explore, and I'm not willing to put them all on the backburner to focus on resolving TSM. So TSM will gurgle along in the cracks, and will probably only get a dedicated treatment (multiple chapters posted in a row) for the climax proper.

Yours,
Cheeseburger Brown

P.S. I will respond to other comments -- I'm just running out to the zoo now with the fam!Cheeseburger Brownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01384136287767500794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-46998715110357292242009-07-14T10:01:37.860-04:002009-07-14T10:01:37.860-04:00SaintPeter - Don't give Simon a big head. It looks nice shaved bald right now, but if it grew that might not be the case.

I thoroughly enjoyed this final chapter, and I admit that TSM does not occupy a top spot in my list of favorite CBB stories. I can't put my finger on why. Maybe the shifting POV's from chapter to chapter make it seem less personal. Probably would flow much better when without interruptions (or when made into a movie, as has been suggested for CBB's works).

Your writing here is just brilliant, CBB. Again, that's hard to quantify. It just flows well through my mind as I read, and makes me think without making me feel like I'm working at it.Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08722639974320971726noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-21447124592202030202009-07-13T17:00:45.523-04:002009-07-13T17:00:45.523-04:00I agree with Orick, this was certainly a "bit...I agree with Orick, this was certainly a "bittersweet" ending. I got a bit sniffy by the end. These need to be labeled "NSFW", if crying in the workplace is frowned upon.

I wonder, though, wouldn't the robot idiot rebel as well? Or was the call of a pretty girl(robot) enough to tame his wild beast?

Anyway, I loved this story dearly, even if it did take a long long time to come out.

I don't know if I am excited to get back into TSM. I have always had issues with the disjointed nature of the chapters, now I have to re-remember how everything went and how it all ties into the other bits in the burger-verse. It always makes me glad for the Comments section, so Simon can tell us all the significance of each part.SaintPeterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02064605142705446251noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-54714527257242123372009-07-13T15:07:36.532-04:002009-07-13T15:07:36.532-04:00I'll disagree with Orick and say that the last...I'll disagree with Orick and say that the last chapter was a very satisfying way to wrap things up. After the climax of chapter 6, this denouement was very well written. There was enough inherent confusion combined with the reader being able to guess things a step or two ahead of Idiot. Also, the highly narrative chapter (versus action- and dialogue-packed) helped produce the overall melancholy that suffused us at the end. Or me, anyway.

[nitpick]
Would it have been better to put a hyphen in for "de-lar"? Makes more sense for me, anyway.

I was jarred a little by the "aperiodic" sway of the ferns. I thought that a more contextual adjective would have suited. Irregular? Whatever.
[\nitpick]

When the vizier pegs the time remaining before the Panstellars cut off all access to and from their world, and claims that it'll be, "A dozen radians at the outside," is he measuring that time in the trigonometric sense of the word? Because that would be so COOL!

A circle (or planetary orbit) is circumscribed by 2*PI radians, equating to approximately 6.28 radians in a given year. Therefore, 12 radians is just under two years for any given solar body. A wonderfully efficient way to tell time!

And a very nice end to Idiot's tale. Sucks about the Lifeloaf, though. That his death was relayed in such a brusque and unfeeling manner just piles on the ignominy for one who was killed after giving so much service for the benefit of others. A lesson that's easy to miss since it is glossed over so quickly.Simonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06946639624660520997noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-67462567114266707212009-07-13T14:58:50.798-04:002009-07-13T14:58:50.798-04:00@anonymous. For me at least, the beach has such a surreal feeling to it, like it's ever so slightly disconnected from the normal parameters of reality. It was bittersweet though.

I think it would be more interesting to let Venus and Idiot be the the start of the Equivalency - the Adam and Eve of the robots.

All in all, a great story. For some reason though, the last chapter feels a bit weaker than the rest, if you don't mind me saying so. Maybe it's because the climax seems to happen in chapter six so chapter seven is more of an epilogue or the change in setting and narrator.

Like most of the CBB stories, I am always thinking, 'damn, someone should really turn this into a masterpiece of a movie,' as I read it.Orick of Torontohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/07151258407218493474noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-21990610748020763932009-07-13T13:30:44.001-04:002009-07-13T13:30:44.001-04:00I loved it! How often does our conscious surface and examine our current course? Do the people around us notice the difference?

How much of our behavior is determined by who is watching? At what point do we behave as if someone is always watching? Is that a bad thing? Is it just habitual at that point? What is the harm of too much publicity(not by an authority, but just everyone)? What is the harm of too much privacy? Where is the correct balance?

Obviously other questions about terrorism/fascism/racism/whatever?Johnhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17680056990468177565noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-84514254665544938492009-07-13T12:58:45.073-04:002009-07-13T12:58:45.073-04:00Masterful, as always.Masterful, as always.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-60868207288990563372009-07-13T12:28:49.519-04:002009-07-13T12:28:49.519-04:00Ooh, great twist.
