You know, as someone who's been following your work -- and the corresponding subculture -- for several years, I have to say I've never felt more out of the loop than I have reading the past few comments.

My copy of the new SoS arrived this morning.

Hopefully sometime soon I will find time for a reading.

Initial impressions...

The dust jacket is not laid out as well could be hoped, for example the text on the back actually curves slightly around onto the edge.

There is a certain novelty in having a traditional style book with the very non traditional author name "Cheeseburger Brown", and I find it amusing that on the spine of the actual book (not the jacket) it has just "Brown" as the author.

It's almost twenty-one.

I've been indisposed caring for various matters, and some of those matters involved rescuing the manuscript of TSM from a corrupt TimeMachine backup which self-borked while being written from my dying PowerBook just hours before said PowerBook committed sepuku and, to make a long story short, ended up as a tangled jangle of metal scraps on my desk, decorated by the blood of my lacerated left index finger.

The good news was that I did successfully retrieve the critically important DVD disc belonging to my employer from the dead machine. The bad news was that I was then left with nothing but my trusty PDA as a computing platform...and, um, my PDA is a clockwork fob-watch.

(It's a lousy calendar but it keeps good time. The Internet integration is decidedly nineteenth century in calibre, and entirely unsatisfactory.)

Because of this sad fact -- and because of various other colluding factors of stressxitement currently colouring my life -- I was a pretty glum fellow on the weekend. Then my step-father showed up on my doorstep at 7:30 AM on Sunday morning and shoved a box into my arms. "I picked this up at Best Buy, and I thought you might be able to make use of it."

It was a 2.4 GHz Apple BlackBook with 2 GB of RAM, a dual-layer DVD burner, and a quarter TB of storage.

I was fairly effusive in my surprise and thanks. I haven't had a *new* computer for seven years (my PowerBook was an eBay baby). I offered him tea, but he had to urgently go off to play golf.

Nice guy, my step-father.

So now I've finished pouring my rescued files into this spiffy new computer, and I'm just about ready to pick-up Chapter 21 where I left off (about 33% complete). I just need to get a little sleep first, and maybe put some time into gussying up my house before the bank's appraiser comes on Thursday to hang the Sword of Damocles over my tender witto throat. That should be fun.

And then, after that drama plays out, there'll be nothing to get in the way of Chapter 21 except doing my day job. Business as usual, in other words.

Long answer short, Sheik: it's a-comin'.

Great chapter. I loved the description of the Vestibule's insides. You do very well explaining concepts as if they really could, and do, exist.

To someone with an English degree, anyway.
