Seconding American clients is good, as is evading the 20% hit applied to the rest of the company.

My department trimmed staff last month, and I'm still around - which is good - but the rest of the company is going to be laying off probably dozens over the next month or so. In addition to many already gone. Bad times.

While the return to some semblance of normalcy is good, so is job security and a burgeoning ability to dream about row-boats yet again.

Is The Secret Mathematic on indefinite hiatus for the nonce? My pla...Dear Sheik,

Yeah, I'm alive and recovering. My plate is not yet clear of tasks, but it's getting to the point where I can at least start to think of other things.

The good news: I helped executive three CONCURRENT shows, and all three have been hailed as big successes from the clients. This is a big deal, because the company I work for is currently in a highly predatory mode, scooping up American clients as our competitors south of the border go bankrupt. The fact that the Americans like what we deliver means we're going to get more gigs, which means job security for me because American budgets are 3 to 4 times larger than our largest Canadian shows, and they have many more shows/conferences/meetings per year.

...This is especially good news now, because 90% of my company just had their benefits indefinitely suspended and have been forced to a four day work week (with the associated 20% pay cut). Not to put too fine a point on it: THAT'S EVERYONE IN THE WHOLE DAMN COMPANY EXCEPT MY DEPARTMENT.

Why? Because we're profitable. So long as we can stay profitable, I can hopefully avoid the fate of most of the rest of the people in the building (many of whom will probably be laid off come the end of our fiscal year in summer).

To hedge my bets, I've also been moonlighting. This is what really killed all my free time. I'm doing work for a local museum, creating 3D digital models of some artifacts in their permanent collection which visitors will interact with electronically (using various tools and techniques to "restore" the artifacts). This is fun work, but intensely labour-intensive.

So now my day job returns to somewhat normal, and the moonlighting is proceeding according to schedule...which means I get to start daydreaming about robots and spaceships again. Which is high time, because I don't think I could go much longer. So many times I've been tempted to shirk my responsibilities in order to do some writing, but each time pressure and anxiety has forced me back to the grindstone, instead.

But today I just penned the outline to the next story, and I'm starting to get excited about it. I'm going to hash out the details during my drive home tonight, and if all goes well I may be able to start on the first chapter in the next couple of days.

Wish me luck!

Yours,
Cheeseburger BrownCheeseburger Brownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01384136287767500794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-67750028857416374622009-02-17T15:43:00.000-05:002009-02-17T15:43:00.000-05:00HE SPEAKS!!!Does this mean you're actually somewha...HE SPEAKS!!!

Does this mean you're actually somewhat less obscenely overloaded right now?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-12092628809343157552009-02-17T11:47:00.000-05:002009-02-17T11:47:00.000-05:00I'm working on the plot outline.
