Dr. Teeth and The Electric Mayhem had such a gift for poetry (they don't look like Presbyterians to me). Perhaps Dallas' latitude is far less of a problem than its light pollution (though I didn't see any auroras out in Kaufman at 3AM during the Geminid peak either).

But about the story... CBB, I have to wonder if Baron's predicament doesn't sound a bit too contrived. Why wouldn't this conceited man tell the police all about how the intruders had a "Santa Claus complex" and how they were bent on saving Christmas from him? Seems like he wouldn't pass up a chance to rat them out and sneer at their obvious delusions.

Even so, this story is loads of fun and there's no way you can dim the glory of a hundred ninja santas.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-1166255837043149232006-12-16T02:57:00.000-05:002006-12-16T02:57:00.000-05:00I've seen the Lights twice now, both times here in...I've seen the Lights twice now, both times here in ND. The first time they were a light green, it looked like dust being scattered over a vibrating metal plate. The second time it was much thicker and more solid, being blue and green stripes across the sky. It slowly waved and despite the cold winter night, I couldn't bring myself to go inside. Frankly, I believe the Lights to be the most amazing phenomenon the sky has to offer. I'm definitely glad that you and your daughter were able to see it. Pity I missed that one though, although it may not have been visible this far south.

I must congratulate you on your triumph, CBB. Baron's war against Santas and Orphans suddenly became so cliche that it crossed the line into Awesome. I laughed hard. Keep writing!

TRHTeddyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06429915965397673079noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-1166236099274815852006-12-15T21:28:00.000-05:002006-12-15T21:28:00.000-05:00Because I live here in the north-central part of t...Because I live here in the north-central part of the Lone Star State, I can't help think of the Muppets lyric, "Aurora Borealis/Shinin' Down in Dallas/Can you picture that?"

Throughout the song they name other things that are impossible and finish with "Can you picture that?" A few times, Animal follows up with "blabablabadat."

If you've never seen the Muppets, then the above paragraph must seem very strange to you. And, you live under a rock (but not a Fraggle Rock, because I never had HBO).Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08722639974320971726noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-1166210064385919962006-12-15T14:14:00.000-05:002006-12-15T14:14:00.000-05:00Dear Moksha,Well, it remains a rare treat up here ...Dear Moksha,

Well, it remains a rare treat up here in southern Canada, too. I've seen the lights clearly maybe five times in my life counting last night. It is, however, one of the great delights of our planet and I'm so glad my daughter got get a glimpse. She was very interested in learning about the storms on the sun which, she informs anyone who asks, is "made of fire and on fire and has fire around it."

Dear Danimal,

It must be delicious for members of an abused staff so see chinks in the armour of their master, eh? I giggle for them.

Dear gl.,

Audiobook? I don't know. Maybe I'll experiment next year. As for the lights: I saw them best in Edmonton. I was just getting out of a car and I happened to look up, and did a double-take because I did not understand what I saw. It looked like CG. And yes, it was during the winter when the air is clear and crisp.

Dear Mark,

It's like in movies when people say,
"No wait -- let me explain!" while they're being dragged away, and they never think to say something that will get real attention like, "Johnny is the murderer!" or "it's a trap!" They always threaten to reveal critical information or context but never manage to spill the beans to frame their ramblings.

Love,
Cheeseburger BrownCheeseburger Brownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01384136287767500794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-1166208558756415872006-12-15T13:49:00.000-05:002006-12-15T13:49:00.000-05:00Definitely fun seeing Baron's personal staff's rea...Definitely fun seeing Baron's personal staff's reactions to his seemingly insane ramblings. I've always wondered, however, why an intelligent person (okay, that might be a leap for Baron) would not realize how insane it sounds and fully explain the situation. A little context goes a long way.

But, this way makes for more fun.Markhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08722639974320971726noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-1166206756644929982006-12-15T13:19:00.000-05:002006-12-15T13:19:00.000-05:00at some point (maybe is was the mashed/scalloped p...at some point (maybe is was the mashed/scalloped potatoes line), i had a sudden desire to hear you read this aloud. so when are you going to release the audiobook? :)

seeing the aurora borealis is on my list of "things to do before i die." when i was up in edmonton this summer we waited fruitlessly for them every night, but i was guessing winter was the best time to see them. *sigh*gl.https://www.blogger.com/profile/11890196589573443189noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-1166205427217321912006-12-15T12:57:00.000-05:002006-12-15T12:57:00.000-05:00Whoo hoo! Since I did opt for actual locations (Yonge Street, the Hudson's Bay Company, the Eaton Centre), I decided to go all the way and make the restaurant real, too. In the original draft of this chapter it was called the "Midtown Grill" but I changed it for consistency and also because I liked the idea of events happening in the same place where I had my dinner with Red Green.

I'll check out your blog next break I get today.

Dear Simon,

The references were conscious, and I was thinking of you.

Love,
Cheeseburger BrownCheeseburger Brownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01384136287767500794noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-16435271.post-1166193008800598102006-12-15T09:30:00.000-05:002006-12-15T09:30:00.000-05:00"Maybe he's got a girlfriend."Hah, for some reason..."Maybe he's got a girlfriend."

Hah, for some reason that line made me really start envisioning Mr Baron as a slightly younger Mr Burns in my mind.

National Post, truely the paper for the rich and evil. :)

CBB, did you give a free plug to Senator restaurant there?
